Abstract:A 7-year-old boy presented excessive daytime sleepiness for more than 3 months. He was diagnosed as idiopathic hypersomnia by doctor’s consultation, polysomnography, multiple sleep latency tests, and laboratory tests(serum iron 6.7 μmol/L, serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D 20.00 ng/mL, with no other abnormalities). In the absence of common etiology to explain the patient’s symptoms, we first conducted sleep hygiene guidance for the patient and provided targeted supplementation of vitamin D and iron elements. After 8 months, the child’s sleepiness improved significantly, with an increase in serum iron concentration and 25 hydroxyvitamin D level. Excessive daytime sleepiness is a potential danger for children, and in addition to considering common causes, attention should also be paid to the role of nutrient deficiencies.
