Study on post-traumatic growth and its predictors of college students during COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Objective To investigate the status of post-traumatic growth among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic, and explore the predictive effects of meaning in life and resilience on post-traumatic growth. Methods By using meaning in life questionnaire(MLQ), Connor-Davidson resilience scale(CD-RISC), and post-traumatic growthinventory(PTGI), 822 students from one university in Shanghai were investigated. The data were organized and analyzed to explore the correlations among resilience, meaning in life, and post-traumatic growth. Results The total PTGI score of the college students was 60.87±20.82. There was no significant difference in PTGI scores between males and females(P>0.05). Scores of PTGI in lower grade students were higher than those in seniors(P<0.05), and students with better academicperformance had higher scores than those with lower academic performance(P<0.05). Significant positive correlation occurred among meaning in life, resilience, and post-traumatic growth(P<0.01). Meaning in life and resilience positively predicted post-traumatic growth(adjusted R2=0.446). Resilience indirectly influenced the post-traumatic growth through meaning in life. The mediation effect of meaning in life accounted for 18.52% of the total effect. Conclusion Meaning in life plays a partial mediating role between resilience and post-traumatic growth.
