Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship between perceived stress and Internet addiction among middle school students and its influencing mechanism. Methods A total of 7 049 students from five middle schools in Hefei were investigated with perceived stress scale, Internet addiction scale, psychological resilience scale, and shame scale. Results Middle school students’ perceived stress was positively correlated with Internet addiction and shame, while negatively correlated with psychological elasticity. Perceived stress could directly predict individual Internet addiction, and could directly affect individual Internet addiction through three paths: the intermediary of shame, the intermediary of psychological elasticity, and the chain intermediary of shame and psychological elasticity. Conclusion Perceived stress can affect individuals’ Internet addiction through resilience and shame, and can reduce individuals’Internet addiction by reducing shame and enhancing psychological resilience.
