Abstract:Objective To explore the impact of personality traits on fear of missing out of university students and its mechanism. Methods A total of 622 university students were investigated by using the ten-item personality inventory in China(TIPI-C), fear of the missing out scale, and positive psychological capital questionnaire. The relations among personality traits, degree of fear of missing out, and positive psychological capital status of university students, as well as possible mediating effects were analyzed. Results Each dimension of the big five personality was significantly negatively correlated with the fear of missing out, and significantly positively correlated with positive psychological capital. Positive psychological capital was significantly negatively correlated with the fear of missing out. Each dimension of the big five personality directly negatively predicted fear of missing out and positively predicted positive psychological capital. Positive psychological capital directly negatively predicted the fear of missing out. Positive psychological capital partially mediated the relationship between each dimension of the big five personality and the fear of missing out. Conclusion The personality traits of university students can directly affect fear of missing out, and have an impact on fear of missing out through the mediating effect of positive psychological capital.
