Abstract Objective To investigate the relationship between mobile phone internet dependence and social communication skills of college students. Methods A total of 442 college students were selected,and were surveyed with the mobile phone addiction tendency scale,self-esteem scale,interpersonal harmony scale,alienation scale and social avoidance and distress scale. Results ① There existed a significant negative correlation of mobile phone internet dependence with self-esteem and interpersonal harmony,and a positive correlation with alienation and social avoidance. There was a significant positive correlation of self-esteem with interpersonal harmony,and a negative correlation with alienation and social avoidance. ② There were significant differences between different mobile phone internet dependences and interpersonal harmony,alienation and social avoidance. ③ Self-esteem partially mediated the effect of mobile phone internet dependence and social communication skills. Conclusion Improving the level of self-esteem of college students may be the new way to improve the social communication skills among those with mobile phone internet dependence.
