AbstractObjective To investigate the comprehension of acceptation of ‘high’ and ‘low’ in moderately retarded children. Methods Sixty-four moderately retarded children aged 7 to 12 were selected, and experimental study was conducted among them for the comprehension of acceptation of‘high’and‘low’. Results and conclusion ① There were significant differences among three age groups on the comprehension of the acceptations of“high”and“low”. Children aged 11 to 12 understood these two words better than those aged 7 to 8 and 9 to 10. ② When taking the verbal tasks, children performed more sufficiently under a pure or a consistent context than a context of conflict. ③ When taking the operation tasks, children from three age groups showed no difference on the accuracy rates when asked to sort 3 objects by their heights. ④ Children found it much more difficult to understand the body high and low when confronted with a 3-object-arrangement task or a context of conflict than a pure or a consistent context.
