Abstract Parental body talk will affect the development of adolescent body image. Whether the body image is healthy or not not only affects physical health, but also has a profound impact on mental health. With the rapid growth of the body and the gradual maturation of the secondary sexual characteristics, adolescents pay much attention to appearance, making it a critical period for body image development. The influence of parental comments on Chinese adolescents’ body image has been less addressed. Parents also rarely consider the potential consequences of comments they made to their adolescent children. The present study reviewed findings of previous studies on the influence of various types of parental comments on adolescents’ body image, including criticism/praise, weight teasing, encouragement to diet, and self-deprecating fat talk, and also explored the possibility to improve the adolescents’ body image through intervention on parental comments.
