Phenomenological study on post-traumatic growth experience of primary caregivers of children with epilepsy |

Abstract Objective To explore the post-traumatic growth experiences and feelings of the primary caregivers of children with epilepsy. Methods Thirteen primary caregivers of children with epilepsy were selected as the research subjects by using purposive sampling method, and semi-structured interviews were conducted by using phenomenological research methods in qualitative research. Colaizzi analysis method was used to analyze the data and extract and summarize themes. Results The post-traumatic growth experience of the main caregivers of children with epilepsy could besummarized into 4 themes: positive coping(positive cognitive attitude and enhanced personal strength), improvementof interpersonal communication(more harmonious family relationship, closer parent-child relationship, and increasedempathy and altruistic awareness), deepening of life insights(cherishing life, reorganizing event prioritization, and changing personnel attitudes), and perceived social support(support from family and friends, support from medical staff, and support from patient alliances). Conclusion The primary caregivers of children with epilepsy perceive negative emotions caused by traumatic events, as well as positive experiences of post-traumatic growth. Medical staff should promptly identify the positive psychological experiences of caregivers, fully explore their potential for post-traumatic growth, and guide them to adopt positive and effective coping strategies in order to improve the level of post-traumatic growth, enhance their caregiving abilities, and ultimately improve the quality of life of the children and themselves.
