Abstract Objective To explore the effects of shyness on the cooperation of children and adolescents, and investigate the role of social support. Methods Questionnaires were adopted to investigate the relations among shyness, social support, and cooperative tendency in children and adolescents. Experimental method was adopted to explore the impact of social support initiation on cooperative behavior among shy individuals. Results Shyness level had a significantly negative effect on cooperative tendency among children and adolescents. Social support partially mediated the relationship between shyness level and cooperative tendency. Social support initiation could effectively enhance the cooperative level of shy individuals in the public goods dilemma. Conclusion There is a negative relationship between shyness and cooperation among children and adolescents. Shyness level can reduce cooperative tendency through decreasing social support, and social support initiation can significantly increase the cooperative behavior of shy individuals.
