Abstract Objective To explore gender difference and influencing factors of fear of missing out(FoMO). Methods Literature search was carried out in 12 databases in China and abroad. A total of 118 eligible studies(including 120 effect sizes)were selected by EndNote X 9 , with a time span from 2013 to 2023 . Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 3 . 0 combined with random effects model was used for statistical analysis. Results The main effect analysis showed that the gender difference of FoMO was not significant. The moderating effect showed that the females’ FoMO was significantly higher than the males’ in adolescence, but the opposite was true in adulthood. The FoMO was significantly higher in domestic men than in women, but the opposite was true in foreign countries. By using the SONG Xiaokang version of the FoMO scale, the score of male FoMO was significantly higher than that of female, while the other scales were opposite. The moderating effects of publication year and type were not significant. Conclusion The gender difference in FoMO is affected by age, sampling area, and scales, so it is necessary to analyze the situation in intervention.
