Abstract A language is a mosaic，tinkered together from prelinguistic parts by biological as well as cultural selection. Here the author discusses briefly some of the components of this mosaic in light of their neurophysiological bases. To optimize language learning，it is important to recognize and exploit the different maturational schedules of these components of language.
