Abstract Infancy is a stage of dramatic evolution of individual sleep when behavioral sleep problems such as difficulty falling asleep and frequent and prolonged night wakings are very common. According to the transactional model of infant sleep, parenting and related parental factors as well as parent-child interaction play important roles in infant sleep. Parenting-focused intervention proves to be effective for infant sleep problems and has become more and more professionalized, individualized and systematized. Given lacking of professional resources, sleep consultants sprung up as a new business, who provide consultation and suggestion to parents with infant sleep problems, particularly in terms of parenting adjustment. However, the statement from the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine (SBSM) in US expressed concern about professional backgrounds of sleep consultants and recommended caution in using sleep consultants.
