Abstract Objective To investigate the color and line preferences in retarded children. Methods One hundred retarded children were selected，and the preferences to the colors of sky-blue，bright-green，pink and orange and to the lines of straight line，polyline，curve and swirl line were surveyed and analysed. Results In four of the colors，the order of preference in retarded children was sky-blue，bright-green，pink and orange. There were significant differences in the preference for color tone，and cool color tone of sky-blue and bright-green was preferred. There were gender differences in the color preferences. In four of the lines，the order of preference in retarded children was curve，swirl line，polyline and straight line. There were significant differences in the preference for lines，and complicated lines of curve and swirl line were preferred. There was no gender difference in the line preferences. Conclusion Educators may more often use the colors of sky-blue and bright-green and the lines of curve and swirl line to draw more attention from retarded children.
