Abstract Language disorder is a common comorbidity of children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD). It is very important to understand the main contents and methods of language assessment for children with ASD. Based on the need to diagnose and establish individualized intervention plans, language assessment not only needs to assess children’s reception and expression ability, but also needs to accurately assess the impairment of the five elements of language, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Standardized assessment tools, and non-standardized tools, such as caregiver interviews, questionaires, environmental observations, and language sample analysis, are common methods of language assessment. It more comprehensively evaluates the language ability of children with ASD by combining these two methods. Therefore, we provide an overview of the main contents and methods of language assessment for children with ASD in this review.
