Abstract:Objective To explore the influence of parenting sense of competence on children’s problematic behaviors, and test the mediating effect of parental motivational evaluation. Methods A total of 129 children aged 4 -17 years completed online test by using the Chinese version of parenting sense of competence scale, motivational evaluation questionnaire, and parents’ strengths and difficulties questionnaire. The related data of the questionnaires were statistically analyzed. Results The dimensions of efficacy and satisfaction in parenting sense of competence were significantly negatively correlated with children’s problematic behaviors, and significantly positively correlated with parental motivational evaluation. There was a significant negative correlation between parental motivational evaluations and problematic behaviors in children. Parental motivational evaluation played a complete mediating role in the relationship between the efficacy dimension of parenting sense of competence and children’s problematic behaviors, and played a partial mediating role in the relationship between the satisfaction dimension of parenting sense of competence and children’s problematic behaviors. Conclusion Parenting sense of competence can affect children’s problematic behaviors through motivational evaluation. Parents are advised to learn and apply motivational evaluations to reduce the occurrence of problematic behaviors in children.
