Abstract:Objective To investigate the parenting stress in parents of boys with autism spectrum disorder(ASD). Methods The parents of 37 ASD boys(ASD group)and 39 healthy control boys(control group)completed the autismbehavior checklist(ABC), childhood autism rating scale(CARS), strength and difficulty questionnaire(SDQ), andparenting stress index(PSI). PSI was evaluated again after 6 months. Results The total scores of PSI children, parentsand total stress in the ASD group were significantly higher than those in the control group(P<0.05). Total score of ABCwas positively correlated with total scores of PSI children and total stress(r=0.522, P<0.01; r=0.359, P<0.05). Totalscore of CARS was positively correlated with the total score of PSI children(r=0.326, P<0.05). SDQ attention disability was positively correlated with total scores of PSI children and total stress(r=0.417, P<0.05; r=0.422, P<0.01). SDQ total difficulty was positively correlated with total scores of PSI children and total stress(r=0.384, P<0.05; r=0.347, P<0.05). During follow-up, there were no significant differences in the total scores of PSI children, parents and total stress, compared with baseline scores in the two groups. Conclusion The parents of boys with ASD are under great pressure, and the parenting stress is related to the symptoms and difficulties of the children.
