Effect of online parenting and mindfulness training on parents of schoolage children with attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder

Abstract:Objective To explore the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of online parenting and mindfulness training program. Methods Twenty families of school-age children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) from March to May, 2020 were selected for 12-week online parenting training, which included parenting strategies and mindfulness training for parents. Parenting sense of competence, parenting stress, mindfulness in parenting, anxiety, and depression were evaluated before and after treatment. Results After the treatment, 19 parents completed the evaluation. The parenting efficacy (P<0.001) and parenting self-esteem (P<0.001) were significantly increased, with large effect size (Cohen's d>0.8). The parenting disturbance (P=0.03) and parenting difficulty (P=0.03) were significantly decreased, while the parenting confusion (P=0.03) and mindfulness training(P=0.04) were significantly increased, with medium effect size (Cohen's d>0.5). There was no significant improvement in anxiety and depression. The average score of work alliance was above 4. The attendance rate was 96.5%, and the satisfaction and recommendation were both 100%. Conclusion It is feasible and acceptable for online parenting and mindfulness training to intervene in the families of school-age ADHD children, which can significantly improve parenting sense of competence and mindfulness in parenting, while reducing some parenting stress.
