Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship between emotional complexity and wise reasoning in university students, and investigate the mediating roles of empathy and forgiveness. Methods A total of 503 university students were tested with the range and differentiation of emotional experience scale, Hearland forgiveness scale, interpersonal reactivity index, and situated wise reasoning scale. The relevant data were statistically analyzed. Results There were significantly positive correlations between emotional complexity, empathy, forgiveness and wise reasoning in university students. Empathy and forgiveness had independent partial mediating effects between emotional complexity and wise reasoning, and produced a chain mediation effect through the path of emotional complexity→empathy→forgiveness→wise reasoning. Conclusion Emotional complexity can directly predict wise reasoning among university students. Individuals with higher emotional complexity demonstrate stronger empathy and forgiveness abilities, which in turn promote their wise reasoning.
