Abstract Objective To investigate the psychological and emotional impact, as well as the coping mechanisms of medical staff and their children during the corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, and to provide a theoretical basis for effective psychosocial support in the future. Methods An online survey was sent to medical staff and their families from February 22nd to 29th, 2020, aiming at understanding the psychological, emotional and social impact in their lives. A comparative analysis was conducted based on their responses. Results A total of 1 293 valid questionnaires were collected, of which 244 were male and 1 049 were female medical staff. Up to 353 (27.3%) participants had been psychologically affected by the epidemic, of which 329 (25.4%) suffered from depression and 187 (14.5%) from anxiety. The statistical differences of the psychological impact among medical staff, such as junior staff, front?line health workers, front?line management and support staff of disease prevention and control, and staff with underlying medical conditions, were statistically significant (P<0.05). A total of 502 valid questionnaires from the children of medical staff were collected, of which 279 were boys and 223 were girls. Up to 206 (41.0%) children had been affected by the epidemic. A higher incidence of behavioral, emotional and physical disorders was found in children of medical staff with depression and/or anxiety than without (P<0.01). Conclusion During the COVID-19 outbreak, there were psychosocial problems and risk factors for developing them in a higher considerable part of the medical health workers, especially in junior and frontline medical and management staff. Specific response strategies are required to meet the sociological and psychological needs of medical staff and to provide effective psychosocial supports for the children of medical staff.
