Abstract:Objective To explore the effects of interpersonal relationships on sleep quality in university dormitories, the mediating role of emotional intelligence, and the moderating role of social support, and provide a basis for physical and mental health interventions to university students. Methods The university students residing in dormitories were selected as the subjects. A total of 478 valid data were collected through online testing by using the dormitory interpersonal relations scale, Pittsburgh sleep quality index scale, emotional intelligence scale, and perceived social support scale. Statistical analysis was used to explore the correlations and interaction paths among the variables. Results There were significant correlations between interpersonal relationships in dormitories, emotional intelligence, perceived social support, and sleep quality(P<0.01). Emotional intelligence partially mediated the relationshipbetween interpersonal relationships and sleep quality, with an effect value of 0.028(95 %CI: 0.002-0.064). Theperceived social support moderated the first half of the mediation path(interpersonal relationships in dormitories →emotional intelligence → sleep quality), and reinforced the predictive role of dormitory relationships in emotional intelligence. Conclusion Interpersonal relationships in dormitories directly affect sleep quality and indirectly affect sleep quality through the mediating effect of emotional intelligence, with perceived social support playing a moderating role. Universities should pay attention to students with tense interpersonal relationships and poor sleep quality in dormitories, emphasize the joint effect of multiple factors, and promote the physical and mental health of university students.
