Abstract:Objective To observe the effect of Thera-Band progressive resistance training on lower limb function in children with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Methods A total of 29 children who were 6 weeks after DDH operation from January 2014 to June 2015 were randomly divided into observation group and control group. The observation group of 14 cases (20 hips) accepted rehabilitation treatment including Thera-Band progressive resistance training. The control group of 15 cases (20 hips) received conventional rehabilitation therapy. For all children, hip flexion and extension muscles were evaluated by manual muscle test, and range of motion and root mean square (RMS) (values of rectus femoris, glute us maximus, and mesoglutaeus) by surface electromyography before and after treatment. Results There were no significant differences between the observation group and the control group in range of motion, muscle strength, and RMS (values of rectus femoris, gluteus maximus, and mesoglutaeus) before treatment (P>0.05). In both groups all children showed significant improvements in muscle strength and RMS values of rectus femoris, gluteus maximus, and mesoglutaeus 3 months after treatment (P<0.01). And there were no significant differences between the observation group and the control group in range of motion after treatment (P>0.05). After 1 month of treatment, hip flexion and extension muscles strength and knee extension muscle strength in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). After 3 months of treatment, hip extension and abduction muscles strength in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.01); hip flexion muscle and knee extension muscle strength in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). After 3 months of treatment, RMS values of both groups were significantly higher than those before treatment (P<0.01); RMS values of rectus femoris (P<0.05), and RMS values of gluteus maximus and mesoglutaeus (P<0.01) in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group. Conclusion Thera-Band progressive resistance training is helpful to improve the lower limb function in children with DDH.
