Abstract:The maintenance of the physiological function of the central nervous system requires the coordination of the excitatory and inhibitory neural circuits. The γ-amino-butyric acid(GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the adult brain. GABAergic responses undergo a switch from being excitatory to inhibitory in the early life. Increasing evidence has demonstrated the delay of switch results in the imbalance of excitatory and inhibitory neural circuits, and leads to the neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder(ASD), epilepsy, and schizophrenia. This review provides an overview of GABA and inhibitory neural circuits in neurodevelopmental disorders. It summerizes GABA inhibitory pathway in patients with neurodevelopmental disorders. In this way, it explores the possible direction of future research and the prospect of the application of this target.
