Abstract Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have distinct social disabilities. Social assistive robotics (SAR) has obtained effective outcomes in social intervention for ASD children due to its nature preponderance. In order to enlighten the improvement of ASD children's social skills, the present paper reviews the robots' roles, the intervention designs, and the limitations in previous intervention studies. Also, the direction of future intervention research is discussed.
