Abstract Objective To explore the influence of therapist-supported parents involved early intervention (TPEI) model on the joint attention of autistic children, and to provide effective measures for early intervention of joint attention in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).Methods Twenty-seven therapist-supported parents intervened in ASD children treatment. The joint attention ability of ASD children was evaluated and analyzed before intervention, and 1, 3, and 6 months after intervention. Results After parents' intervention, the total score of joint attention of ASD children was significantly improved (P<0.001). With the extension of intervention time, the seven dimensions of common attention (eye gaze, eye alternation, following close indication, following distant indication, showing, indicating, and following visual cue) were significantly improved (P<0.001). Among them, eye gaze had a significant effect after 1 month of intervention, and the other six dimensions were all effective after 3 months of intervention (P<0.001). Conclusion TPEI model can effectively improve the joint attention ability of ASD children in eye gaze, eye alternation, following instructions (short distance and long distance), showing, active indication, and following visual cue ability.
