Abstract:Objective To assess the efficacy of probiotic supplementation for treatment of functional constipation in children and adolescents, and provide evidence for clinical practice. Methods Relevant randomized controlled trials were collected by electronic searching for domestic and overseas literature. Revman 5.1 software was adopted for statistical analysis and description of outcome parameters. Results Six randomized controlled trials were included. Meta-analysis revealed that probiotic supplementation had no significant therapeutic effect in overall participants with functional constipa-tion. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that probiotic supplementation did not significantly ameliorate symptoms(abdominal pain, stool frequency, stool hardness and fecal soiling)of participants with functional constipation. Conclusion Meta-analysis indicates that probiotic supplementation may not have therapeutic effect on functional constipation in children and adolescents.
