Abstract:While academic research is flourishing, more and more cases of serious research misconduct appear. The author reviews the ethical problems of fabrication, falsification and plagiarism as well as various other questionable research practices and discusses their damaging, far-reaching consequences. He then proceeds to suggest ways to handle the situation, including strengthening and promoting the basic principles of research and professional ethics, particularly in health science and educational and social research.
