Abstract:How parents evaluate, interpret, and response to their children's behaviors (especially problem behaviors) plays an important role in the functioning of the child and the family. Investigators usually rely on parent's self-reported attribution, emotion and behavioral response to hypothetical vignettes to assess parental reactivity. These studies show that there are individual or group differences in parental reactivity to children misbehaviors and it is moderated by the type or the nature of child behaviors, the history of child problem behavior, and the age and gender of the child. These studies also demonstrate that parental special attribution style is associated with their affect and behavioral response preference. Future research in this area should be strengthened by domestic investigators focusing on understanding the mechanisms of how parents react to children's behaviors cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally.
